Josh Lopina Signs Three Year NHL Contract with Anaheim Ducks

ANAHEIM, CA – The Ducks have signed center Josh Lopina to a three-year entry-level contract beginning in the 2022-23 NHL season. Lopina will report to the San Diego Gulls, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL) on an amateur tryout (ATO) for the remainder of this season.

Lopina, 21 (2/16/01), scored 21-29=50 points with a +43 rating and 20 penalty minutes (PIM) in 56 career games with the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (UMass) from 2020-22. Lopina helped the Minutemen to a national championship in 2020-21 and to a NCAA Tournament appearance this season.

Ducks’ Troy Terry joins select company with 30th goal

ANAHEIM, CA – Troy Terry joined some elite company with a second-period goal Monday, his 30th of the season. Only nine other players in Ducks history have scored 30 or more in a season, led by that Teemu Selanne fellow. Selanne’s team record of 52 might be out of reach this season for Terry.

After all, there are only 17 games remaining.

Comparisons to Selanne are unfair. He was, and ever shall be, the Finnish Flash.

Terry is still proving his worth to the Ducks and to the NHL.

NEWARK — More than a year after achieving the milestone, the Devils’ Travis Zajac was to be honored during Thursday night’s game for playing 1,000 career games with the franchise.

“That’s something you want to give him and something that he deserved, too,” said Jesper Bratt, who was a teammate for four seasons with Zajac. “It was the situation we were in and we could not give him that, so to have that kind of celebration is awesome and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Buoyed by the NHL’s first seven-point performance in more than a decade, Schmaltz paced the League with 3-5-8 in two outings to help the Coyotes (16-35-4, 36 points) pick up a pair of victories and improve to 4-2-0 in their last six starts dating to Feb. 20. Schmaltz first scored the game-winning goal against the No. 1 overall team in the NHL standings, the Colorado Avalanche, in a 2-1 triumph March 3. He then set a franchise record and became the first NHL player to collect seven points in a game since Feb. 2, 2012 (Sam Gagner: 4-4-8 w/ EDM) with 2-5-7 in an 8-5 win against the Ottawa Senators March 5. The 26-year-old Madison, Wis., native – who also matched a Coyotes/Jets record for assists in a game – has played in 36 total contests this season, ranking fourth on Arizona with 14-19-33 and eighth in the entire NHL with a 21.2 shooting percentage.

Craig Smith hits jackpot in Vegas with hat trick as Bruins beat Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS, NV – Craig Smith scored three goals and the Boston Bruins beat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2 on Thursday night.

It was Smith’s third career hat trick and second with the Bruins. It’s the third consecutive season Smith has recorded a hat trick.

The Bruins improved to 4-1-0 on their six-game road trip, and 9-3-2 in their last 14 away from home. Overall they’ve won six of their last seven games as they inch closer to third-place Toronto in the Atlantic Division.

David Pastrnak scored twice for Boston, and Jeremy Swayman stopped 34 shots. Pastrnak’s 23 goals since Jan. 1 lead the NHL.

Jack Eichel and Jonathan Marchessault scored for Vegas, and Robin Lehner made 31 saves.

Nick Schmaltz’s 7 points sets Coyotes record, most in NHL since 2012

GLENDALE, AZ – In March, a Coyotes – Senators game carries more 2022 NHL Draft Lottery implications than anything else. Might as well set a record or two, then, huh? Nick Schmaltz just did that on Saturday, generating a Coyotes-record seven points (two goals, five assists) in Arizona’s 8-5 win over the Senators.

Kingston Frontenacs star, Shane Wright has been the consensus top pick in the upcoming 2022 NHL Draft for some time now and yet some in the media are looking for reasons to knock him out of the top spot. Maybe his point production isn’t overtly dominant or maybe his unselfish play can be boring to some. The fact is every NHL team wants players like Wright who understand the little things as much as scoring points.
