It’s Time To Fully Believe in Filip Gustavsson

ST. PAUL , MN – If you’re looking for one piece of 20-year-old pop culture to describe the Minnesota Wild’s start to the season, it’s easily Michael Scott looking stone serious into the camera and declaring, “No question about it, I am ready to get hurt again.

It’s October 23, just six games into the season, but you can unironically look at this team and go, The Wild are a wagon. It’s not even just you buying in on this. The media is in on them. The players are in on themselves. And, frankly, until they spend a second trailing on the scoreboard, why shouldn’t they be?

Troy Terry Isn’t Old, but Feels Old

ANAHEIM, CA – Inside Great Park Ice, Troy Terry’s stall sits between Alex Killorn and Mason McTavish. That’s two ends of the age spectrum with the 35-year-old Killorn and the 21-year-old McTavish. At 27, Terry already feels like one of the elder statesmen.

“I think it’s a fun combination of ages,” Terry said. “We’ve got so many guys under 22, 23 and then we’ve got some guys over 30. So being one of the few like tweeners on the team, it’s fun to kind of connect with both sides.”

Wild’s Filip Gustavsson Named NHL 3rd Star of the Week

NEW YORK, NY – Gustavsson became the 15th goaltender in NHL history to score a goal – and the third to do so on the power play – as he went 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .962 save percentage to guide the Wild (3-0-2, 8 points) to a pair of wins. He turned aside 27 of 28 shots before becoming the first goaltender in franchise history to register a goal as part of a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues Oct. 15. Gustavsson then made 23 saves on 24 shots, coming 1:25 shy of a shutout, in a 3-1 triumph against the Columbus Blue Jackets Oct. 19. The 26-year-old Gustavsson, who improved to 3-0-1 through four games in 2024-25, places among the early season League leaders (minimum: 3 GP) in goals-against average (4th; 1.49), save percentage (4th; .950) and wins (t-4th; 3). He owns a 55-40-15 record in 115 career NHL appearances (2.68 GAA, .913 SV%, 6 SO).

Why Zac Jones’ time has come to make a splash on Rangers’ blueline

NEW YORK, NY – The New York Rangers have been familiar with Zac Jones, their third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, for quite some time now, but with limited opportunity.

After a few preseason games and a strong training camp, along with the way the depth chart looks, there has never been a better chance in Jones’ young career to take heed of the chance in front of him. Not only will Jones have a chance to play as an every-night NHLer, but considering that he has been quarterbacking one of the team’s power play units, he will have the chance to be an impact player.

Ducks’ Gauthier: ‘At the end of the day, I don’t really care what other people think’

ANAHEIM, CA – As Cutter Gauthier enters his first full season with the Anaheim Ducks, he’s looking to leave the trade drama of last season behind him.

Gauthier, who was selected fifth overall by Philadelphia in the 2022 draft, decided he would not play for the Flyers and was traded to Anaheim for Jamie Drysdale and a second-round pick.

The move did not sit well with the Flyers fan base, with Gauthier stating he received death threats in the days and weeks that followed.

“I still get messages here and there, but I can’t change other people’s opinions, nor do I want to,” Gauthier told NHL.com(opens in a new tab). “I’m just going to go out and play my game, do my thing and control how good I am on the ice.

“At the end of the day, I don’t really care what other people think. It’s what I think and feel as a person and what my family thinks. I can’t let all the outside noise distract me or else I’m going to go nowhere.”

Zac Jones has ‘great opportunity’ to lock up spot on Rangers defense

NEW YORK, NY – Zac Jones came into Rangers training camp with the same goal he’s had each of the previous three seasons.

The circumstances, however, could not be any more different.

This is the first time the Rangers did not bring in a brand new defenseman to directly compete with the 23-year-old for the sixth defenseman spot.

That’s not to say there’s zero competition, because there certainly is, primarily with Chad Ruhwedel.

Forward Cole Perfetti Looks to Prove His Worth After Signing Bridge Deal With Jets

WINNIPEG, MB — Cole Perfetti is determined to make the bridge deal that he just signed with the Winnipeg Jets pay off with a more lucrative pact in the future.

The promising forward signed a two-year, US$6.5 million agreement on Monday, and now looks to break through after injuries and inconsistent play hampered his first three NHL seasons.

“You have two more years to prove yourself and go show what you can do on the ice,” Perfetti said after his first practice at the Hockey For All Centre on Tuesday. “I’m going to use this year to try and take a big step with my game and hopefully, play as good as I can for this team and take that next step.

“A bridge deal is all about — I wouldn’t say betting on myself — I would say I have two years to go prove what kind of player you are, what you can do for this organization. That’s my goal every day, to just go and be the best player that I can be and revisit this in two years.”

Perfetti was selected 10th overall by Winnipeg in 2020, but his first two seasons with the Jets were shortened by injuries.

Last year, the forward from Whitby, Ont., scored 19 goals and 38 points in 71 games. But, after a 23-game goalless drought, he became a healthy scratch for the last stretch of the season and the first four playoff games.

Jets agreed to terms with forward Cole Perfetti on a two-year contract

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club announced today they have agreed to terms with forward Cole Perfetti on a two-year contract with an average annual value in the NHL of $3,250,000. Perfetti will be available to the media at hockey for all centre following the Jets practice on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Perfetti, 22, set career-highs in points (38), goals (19), and games played (71) in 2023-24 with the Jets. The Whitby, Ont. native made his NHL playoff debut last season and played in one postseason game for Winnipeg.

Perfetti, the Jets’ first-round pick (10th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft, has recorded 75 points (29G, 46A) and 28 penalty minutes in 140 career NHL games over the past three seasons for Winnipeg.

Nazar trying to stand out among crowded forward group with Blackhawks

CHICAGO, IL – Frank Nazar is aware of the challenge facing him.

The 20-year-old rookie center is looking to make the Chicago Blackhawks roster out of training camp, but that roster is now much more veteran-heavy after the Blackhawks signed eight players as free agents, including five forwards, on July 1. But Nazar, selected by Chicago with the No. 13 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, is taking the big-picture approach.

“I just view it as, we’re here to achieve one big goal as a team,” Nazar said Wednesday. “Obviously there are things they need to do and things that our team needs to do and steps we need to take, so if I’m going to be part of that group, I’ve got to work and I’ve got to earn that spot anyway.”

Nazar will start trying to do just that when he plays in the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase in Maryland Heights, Missouri, outside of St. Louis, this weekend. The Blackhawks face the St. Louis Blues prospects on Friday and the Minnesota Wild prospects on Saturday.

“Just getting used to the pace of play,” Nazar said of his focus this weekend. “I played college and everything, but just be able to go out there and get my legs back and get the feeling of playing hockey and all the small details. That’s the biggest thing of these games for me.”
