Solid Foundation Has Cal Burke On Road To Success

FT. COLLINS, CO – Having a solid supporting foundation is important for everybody and Callahan Burke, a center for the Colorado Eagles, is no different. For many hockey players, traveling across the globe to chase their dreams often involves a struggle to find those to rely on through the ups and downs. That’s not the case for Burke, who uses his family, teammates, and coaches to help him be successful on a day-to-day basis.

Devils giving Travis Zajac well-deserved sendoff in front of fans Thursday

NEWARK, NJ –

NEWARK — More than a year after achieving the milestone, the Devils’ Travis Zajac was to be honored during Thursday night’s game for playing 1,000 career games with the franchise.

“That’s something you want to give him and something that he deserved, too,” said Jesper Bratt, who was a teammate for four seasons with Zajac. “It was the situation we were in and we could not give him that, so to have that kind of celebration is awesome and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Nick Schmaltz Named NHL 2nd Star of the Week

SECOND STAR – NICK SCHMALTZ, C, ARIZONA COYOTES

Buoyed by the NHL’s first seven-point performance in more than a decade, Schmaltz paced the League with 3-5-8 in two outings to help the Coyotes (16-35-4, 36 points) pick up a pair of victories and improve to 4-2-0 in their last six starts dating to Feb. 20. Schmaltz first scored the game-winning goal against the No. 1 overall team in the NHL standings, the Colorado Avalanche, in a 2-1 triumph March 3. He then set a franchise record and became the first NHL player to collect seven points in a game since Feb. 2, 2012 (Sam Gagner: 4-4-8 w/ EDM) with 2-5-7 in an 8-5 win against the Ottawa Senators March 5. The 26-year-old Madison, Wis., native – who also matched a Coyotes/Jets record for assists in a game – has played in 36 total contests this season, ranking fourth on Arizona with 14-19-33 and eighth in the entire NHL with a 21.2 shooting percentage.

LAS VEGAS, NV – Craig Smith scored three goals and the Boston Bruins beat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2 on Thursday night.

It was Smith’s third career hat trick and second with the Bruins. It’s the third consecutive season Smith has recorded a hat trick.

Nick Schmaltz’s 7 points sets Coyotes record, most in NHL since 2012

GLENDALE, AZ – In March, a Coyotes – Senators game carries more 2022 NHL Draft Lottery implications than anything else. Might as well set a record or two, then, huh? Nick Schmaltz just did that on Saturday, generating a Coyotes-record seven points (two goals, five assists) in Arizona’s 8-5 win over the Senators.

Wings Captain Larkin continues strong season

DETROIT, MI – It’s hard to summarize the impact of captain Dylan Larkin on the Detroit Red Wings this season because there are so many things he has done well.

From his presence on the ice to his leadership in the dressing room, Larkin’s impact has been immeasurable, and his late defensive effort in Detroit’s 3-2 overtime win over the New York Rangers last Thursday is the latest symbol of who Larkin is as an athlete in what has been the best season of his career.

Kings’ Arvidsson Finds a Home on the Second Line

LOS ANGELES, CA – Last summer, Los Angeles Kings general manager Rob Blake made a series of moves intended to take the team from rebuilding bottom-feeders to playoff hopefuls. The first of those moves was trading a 2021 second-round pick and a 2022 third-round pick to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Viktor Arvidsson. The initial plan was for Arvidsson to come in and be the goal-scoring winger Anze Kopitar has been missing for the last few seasons. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, but Arvidsson has still found success with the team and is now one of their best offensive weapons.

Welcome To The Sarah Fillier Show

BEIJING, CHINA – Sarah Fillier isn’t the next big thing. She isn’t the future of Canadian hockey. She isn’t going to be a star. She’s the big thing right now. She’s the national team’s thrilling present. She is so transparently the star of her squad in Beijing that many of sports media’s forward-looking pronouncements in the last week—the “next generation” and “poised for breakout” reads of her career—already feel quaint and belated. The great-skating 21-year-old, on leave from her team at Princeton to make her Olympic debut, centered Canada’s electric, productive second line at the world championships in Calgary in August, and shined in just about every one of the hard-fought rivalry series games the U.S. and Canadian national teams played to prepare for the Olympics throughout the fall. It’s not so much that Sarah Fillier has arrived, but that you have.

Why Maple Leafs goalie Jack Campbell injects real heart into NHL’s All-Star glitz

LAS VEGAS, NV – Jason Spezza was right beside Jack Campbell when the goaltender received some good news that would only further brighten a Canada-based hockey player’s midwinter’s day off in sunny Arizona.

A dozen years after being drafted into the league, and a zillion dozen self-effacing thoughts later, Campbell had just learned he’d been named to his first NHL All-Star Game.

Vegas, baby.
