Jon was born in Oklahoma but grew up in Michigan where he began his hockey career. A standout for the Detroit Little Caesars minor hockey team, Jon went on to join the US National Development Team. As a member of the US National Development Team, Jon helped the United States win two World Under-18 Championship gold medals and also represented his country twice in the prestigious World Junior Hockey Championship. He went on to play at the University of Michigan, where Jon played three seasons. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Jon was selected in the second round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. The Devils signed Jon to an Entry-Level contract on March 27, 2013 and he made his NHL debut the following season in November of 2013. He scored his first goal on February 7, 2014 in overtime against the Edmonton Oilers. In doing so, Jon became the first Devils player to score his first career NHL goal in overtime. Jon was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL Expansion Draft on June 21, 2017. He played three seasons with the Golden Knights before going on to play with the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. Jon signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Wild in July of 2021 and later signed a three-year extension in January of 2022 to remain with the Wild.
