Mattias Ekholm was born on May 24, 1990 in Borlänge, Sweden and he currently plays defense for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League. Mattias was drafted in the fourth round, 102nd overall, in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. He scored his first professional goal on January 7, 2014 against the San Jose Sharks and subsequently signed a six-year contract extension with Nashville on October 26, 2015. On October 13, 2021, Ekholm signed a four-year $25 million contract extension with the Predators with an annual average value of $6.25 million. On February 28, 2023, Mattias and a six-round pick were traded to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 fourth-round pick, defenseman Tyson Barrie and prospect Reid Schaefer.
Mattias came through the Brynäs organization in Sweden before playing in the NHL and he has represented Sweden internationally, winning a Gold and Bronze Medal at the World Championships and a Bronze at the World Junior Championships.
