Max began his hockey career spending time with the Belle Tire, Honeybaked and Compuware minor hockey programs in Michigan.

He was selected in the first round by the London Nights in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection, however Max decided to join the US National Development Team for the 2014-15 Season. He joined the Knights for the 2015-16 season where he recorded 28 goals and 52 points in his first OHL season. That same season, Max played an integral role in helping the London Knights win both the OHL championship and the Memorial Cup.

As a result of his strong play, the Anaheim Ducks selected Max in the 1st Round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft with the 24th overall pick. He signed his NHL Entry-Level Contract that same summer and made his pro debut following the 2016-17 OHL season joining the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. Max suited up in 9 AHL playoff games for the Gulls recording a goal and an assist.

The following season, Max represented the United States as a member of the World Junior Championship Team where he won a Bronze Medal.

Max made his NHL debut in the 2018-19 season with the Anaheim Ducks. He recorded his first NHL point on February 19, 2019 with an assist in a win over the Minnesota Wild and would go on to record his first NHL goal 9 games later in a contest against the Montreal Canadiens.

On August 9, 2021, Max re-signed with the Anaheim Ducks on a three-year contract which takes him through the 2023-24 season.
