Larkin on Wings captaincy: ‘I feel ready for it’

Posted on August 7, 2019September 15, 2020

DETROIT, MI – Dylan Larkin believes he’s ready to wear the “C” for the Detroit Red Wings, but he’s not allowing the possibility to distract him ahead of his fifth season with the team.

“I feel ready for it,” Larkin told TSN of the captaincy at the Power Edge Pro camp on Tuesday. “I think it’s something that I can’t focus on. I can’t lose sleep about it. I can’t control it. I just try to be myself and play the game that I love and play with a lot of passion and everyone in the NHL has been a leader at some point in their careers. I’m lucky that we have great veteran leadership and it’s taken a lot of pressure off of me.

Larkin taking leadership role with Red Wings

Posted on July 25, 2019September 15, 2020

DETROIT, MI – It’s July, but Dylan Larkin is thinking ahead.

“I believe I’m working as hard as I possibly can, and also resting, which is a huge part of the summer, and taking care of my body,” the Detroit Red Wings center said on Tuesday. “It’s just stuff you learn. After four years, your body, you feel things, and you understand if you want to play big minutes in the NHL, the big minutes matter in February, March, April and May. That’s what you have to prepare for.”

Dylan Larkin remains Detroit Red Wings’ brightest star in dark season

Posted on February 11, 2019September 15, 2020

DETROIT, MI – Dylan Larkin didn’t want to talk about himself, which is part of what makes him the player he is, the top rebuilding block for the Detroit Red Wings.

He matched his career high in goals during Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center, scoring No. 23 of the season on a wraparound. It was his third point the last two games, after he sat out a contest with a strained oblique.

“I think first of all with Dylan, it is his compete level every night,” fellow center Frans Nielsen said. “He rarely gets outworked out there, and that’s how you stay consistent in this league. If you compete like him, you are going to be OK even on bad days. He skates with the best in this league and has a good shot. He’s coming into a complete player.

“Nine out of 10 games, he’s our best player. You don’t see that a lot, but again, when you compete like him, even on bad days, you’re going to have good things happen out there.”

Red Wings Need Larkin to Step Up in New Era

Posted on September 26, 2018September 15, 2020

DETROIT, MI – Dylan Larkin has suddenly become a veteran at the age of 22 for the Detroit Red Wings.

“It could be the first time I’m not the youngest guy on the team,” Larkin said. “That’s why I’m growing out this beard.”

The rebuilding Red Wings are desperately hoping the talented, two-way centre can quickly become a leader on and off the ice. They suffered a setback before the season even started when captain Henrik Zetterberg’s back injury ended his career.

“It’s a massive loss,” general manager Ken Holland acknowledged. “No one person is going to be able to replace one of the greatest Red Wings of all time.”

Dylan Larkin’s new deal may mean he’s the next Detroit Red Wings captain

Posted on August 10, 2018September 15, 2020

DETROIT, MI – Dylan Larkin did some quick math: By the time his new contract expires, he’ll have played for the DetroitRed Wings for eight years.

His role during that time is almost likely to include the captaincy.

The Wings committed five years and $30.5 million to Larkin, who celebrated his 22nd birthday July 30. Larkin was deemed worthy of the deal, announced Friday, because of the growth he’s shown since he made the team in 2015-16, a year after he was drafted 15th overall in 2014.

In that short time, Larkin has emerged as the frontispiece of the rebuilding process, his inner drive drawing comparisons to Steve Yzerman, Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg.
