LA Kings Goaltender Jack Campbell’s Journey to the NHL

LOS ANGELES, CA –

On January 30, goaltender Jack Campbell watched from the bench as former LA Kings netminder Darcy Kuemper stopped 28 shots on goal to blank the Dallas Stars in a 3-0 victory.

Campbell – the 26-year-old former Dallas Stars first-round pick who played in just one NHL game in six years with that organization – tried to keep his emotions in check throughout the contest, but really deep down, he badly wanted the Kings to pull out the victory. He took part in the game as a backup because he was recalled from the AHL due to an injury to starter Jonathan Quick.

Sparks Sets Record for All-Time Wins with Marlies

TORONTO, ON –

It was a historic Monday at Air Canada Centre as Garret Sparks became the winningest goalie in Marlies franchise history after making 20 saves in a 4-1 victory over the visiting Laval Rocket.

The Marlies came out strong, sustaining pressure in the offensive zone from the start but weren’t able to punch one on the board until there was 5:35 remaining when Trevor Moore snapped a quick shot from the slot to open the scoring. It was Moore’s ninth of the season and was assisted by Kyle Baun and Frederik Gauthier. Baun’s assist is his first point since joining Toronto.

Craig Smith plays in his 500th NHL Game for Predators

NASHVILLE, TN –

When he wasn’t busy building his hockey skills, a 16-year-old Craig Smith spent one summer helping build something else in his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin.

With the 2006 school year over, Smith figured, at least initially, that most of his free time would be spent at the local ice rinks.

The thought of a part-time job hadn’t crossed his mind. That all changed, however, after a chat with his high school hockey coach.

“I was 16 at the time,” recalled Smith. “One of my old high school coaches, Chad Stauffacher, and his brother, Luke – their family owned a construction business – and they were putting up a hotel for the summer. They had asked if I had a job for the summer and I didn’t have anything going on, so I figured I could make some money doing that work.”

While it wasn’t the traditional summer job for a young teenager, Smith embraced the tasks he was given.

Oilers sign college free agent Colin Larkin to one-year deal

EDMONTON, AB –

The Edmonton Oilers have signed free agent forward Colin Larkin to a one-year entry-level deal, the team announced Monday.

The 24-year-old racked up 24 goals and 46 points along 12 penalty minutes and a plus-16 rating in 27 games for UMass Boston this season in NCAA Division III. The six-foot-three, 192-pound forward led the New England Hockey Conference in scoring this season and was named NEHC player of the year for a second straight year.

Larkin is the older brother of Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan.

Jack Campbell Gets First NHL Win for Kings in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV –

It was a moment nearly eight years in the making as Jack Campbell made 41 saves to pick up his first NHL win last night.

Campbell, selected by the Dallas Stars with the No. 11 pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, was making just the second start of his career.

“This one belongs to my parents,” Campbell said about the game puck after the game. “All of their sacrifices through youth hockey and coming to see me, and my sister, too!”

Riley Nash Gets Opportunity to Step Up with Bruins

BOSTON, MA –

Rick Nash was surrounded when he stood in front of his new stall in the home dressing room at TD Garden. While he talked to the media about his first home game and first goal as a member of the Boston Bruins, another player stood off to the side, largely ignored.

But the other R. Nash — that, of course, would be Riley Nash — could play nearly as big a role in the Bruins’ run down the stretch as Rick Nash. The under-the-radar forward has spent this season playing up and down the lineup. He has spent most of his time centering the third line and now finds himself up the depth chart.

With top-line center Patrice Bergeron out for at least two weeks because of a fractured right foot, Riley Nash got the first crack at replacing the irreplaceable when he skated between Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak in a 4-3 overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Ian Cole Traded to Columbus by Ottawa

COLUMBUS, OH – Ian Cole was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets by the Ottawa Senators for forward prospect Nick Moutrey and a third-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Cole was traded to the Senators as part of a three-team deal that brought center Derick Brassard to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.

“Columbus is a tremendous organization,” Cole told TSN. “They’re a great team that’s had a ton of success. I’m excited to get there and get going.”

‘It’s been a long journey’ for new Kings backup goalie Jack Campbell

LOS ANGELES, CA –  The lows are easy to pinpoint for Jack Campbell.

There were those days when he would head home to Cedar Park, Texas, wondering where his career was going. Two years ago, he was playing for the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL.

“That was pretty interesting,” Campbell said. “Obviously there were some days in Texas where I wasn’t enjoying it.”

It’s not a comment on those places or teams so much as how far Campbell had fallen since he was the 11th pick in the 2010 draft, which took place at Staples Center, where, eight long years later, Campbell returned Saturday as goalie for the Kings.
