J.T. Compher’s Busy Summer: From his youth team to the Avs, hockey development is important for the forward

DENVER – As J.T. Compher stepped off the ice from a summer skating session, he was all smiles.

The 6-foot, 193-pound forward had been hard at work during the offseason after having an impressive first professional campaign in 2016-17 for the San Antonio Rampage and Colorado Avalanche.

Compher started the year with the Avalanche’s American Hockey League affiliate in San Antonio and went on to spend four months in the AHL, appearing in 41 games while scoring 30 points (13 goals and 17 assists), before getting recalled on March 1 to Colorado. His NHL debut came the next night at the Ottawa Senators, and he never went back to Texas as he finished the season with the Avalanche.

Sharks Sign Forward Filip Sandberg

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed unrestricted free agent forward Filip Sandberg to a two-year contract.

“Filip is a very creative player who sees the ice well and can create offense in limited space,” said Wilson. “He plays a high-pressure, puck-pursuit game and his battle level is something we have been impressed with, especially against older players. We are excited for him to join our organization.”

Detroit extends Ben Street

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today signed center Ben Street to a one-year contract extension.

Street, 30, was signed by the Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2016 and appeared in 62 games with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, finishing second on the team in regular-season scoring with 55 points (25-30-55), a plus-four rating and 16 penalty minutes in 62 games. His 25 goals led the team, and he also placed among Griffins leaders with 30 assists (3rd), 10 power-play goals (2nd), two shorthanded goals (T1st) and 199 shots on goal (2nd). The 5-foot-11, 200-pound forward also ranked second on Grand Rapids and fourth in the AHL in postseason scoring, registering 21 points (8-13-21) in 19 games, including the double-overtime game-winning goal in Game 2 of the Griffins’ six-game series win over the Syracuse Crunch in the Calder Cup Finals. Street also appeared in six games with the Red Wings in 2016-17, recording an assist in his Detroit debut on March 28 at Carolina.

Wild sign defenseman Gustav Olofsson to 2-year, $1.45M deal

ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Wild have agreed with defenseman Gustav Olofsson on a two-year, $1.45 million contract.

The deal Monday came after Olofsson was one of eight restricted free agents receiving qualifying offers. Olofsson will make $675,000 this season and $775,000 next season. He appeared in 13 games for the Wild last season but could become a top-six regular in 2017-18. The Swede was a second-round draft pick in 2013.

Pens Sign Goalie Filip Gustavsson to a Three-Year Entry-Level Contract

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed prospect goaltender Filip Gustavsson to a three-year, entry-level contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

The deal will kick into effect when Gustavsson begins playing in North America. He will spend the 2017-18 season playing in his native Sweden.

Gustavsson, 19, was Pittsburgh’s top pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, drafted with the 55th overall selection in the second round. He was the third goaltender chosen.

Oilers sign Khaira: The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Jujhar Khaira to a two-year contract extension

EDMONTON – The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Jujhar Khaira to a two-year contract extension.

Khaira, 22, appeared in 10 games with the Oilers in 2016-17, posting one goal, two penalty minutes and a plus one rating. In 25 career NHL games he has recorded three points (1G, 2A) and 15 penalty minutes.

Khaira became the third player of Punjabi Indian descent to score a goal in the NHL, after Robin Bawa and half-French, half-Indian Manny Malhotra.
