Blackhawks Sign Khaira to a Two Year Contract

CHICAGO, IL – The Blackhawks signed forward Jujhar Khaira, a 26-year-old formerly of the Oilers, to a two-year contract with a $975,000 cap hit Wednesday.

Khaira had 63 points in 258 games over the last six seasons in Edmonton, including 11 in 40 games last season. A physical presence with a big body (6-4, 213 pounds) that can grind on the fourth line.

Oilers Re-Sign Jujhar Khaira To Two Year Contract

EDMONTON, AB – Jujhar  Khaira has re-signed with the Oilers. It’s a two year deal valued at 1.2MM AAV a year. Khaira played in sixty games with the Oilers in 2018-19, he finished with 18 points (3-15-18) on the season.

Khaira is one among several contracts that have been tendered to bottom six players today (we haven’t even gotten to Tomas Jurco yet). He’ll likely continue to vie for time on the third line, though he may peak his head out from the top six due to the club’s lack of top six depth on the wings.

How Khaira brothers went from slow starters to Surrey standouts

Surrey, B.C. – Sahvan Khaira didn’t want anything to do with hockey. It was a game that had left him in tears and he surely wasn’t going to skate back to it.

It was the mid 2000s in Surrey, B.C., and there were lots of things an elementary-school kid could do with his time. Soccer was particularly popular, but somehow Sahvan found himself back at the rink.

Excellent Ice is tucked away amid industrial complexes and offices just off Highway 10 in the southern part of the Metro Vancouver city known for its large Punjabi diaspora. Sahvan’s older brother, Jujhar, was receiving one-on-one lessons, so their mother would bring Sahvan along. The instructor took note and let Sahvan skate on the other side of the ice while Jujhar was going through drills.

Oilers sign Khaira: The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Jujhar Khaira to a two-year contract extension

EDMONTON – The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Jujhar Khaira to a two-year contract extension.

Khaira, 22, appeared in 10 games with the Oilers in 2016-17, posting one goal, two penalty minutes and a plus one rating. In 25 career NHL games he has recorded three points (1G, 2A) and 15 penalty minutes.

Khaira became the third player of Punjabi Indian descent to score a goal in the NHL, after Robin Bawa and half-French, half-Indian Manny Malhotra.

Jujhar Khaira’s first NHL goal a special moment for hockey

Jujhar Khaira learned hockey on the streets of Surrey, B.C., a Sikh kid and his little brother scoring their Game 7, Stanley Cup-winning goals while in runners, shooting a tennis ball.

Khaira was no different than millions of Canadian kids, except for one thing: He would go on to score on the big stage Monday night at Rogers Place. It was his first NHL goal as only the third Indo-Canadian to play in the National Hockey League, after Robin Bawa and Manny Malhotra.
