Stars’ Riley Damiani wins Red Garrett Award as ’20-21 AHL Rookie of the Year

AUSTIN, TX – The American Hockey League announced today that Texas Stars forward Riley Damiani has been voted the winner of the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding rookie for the 2020-21 season.

The award was voted on by coaches, players and members of the media in each of the league’s 28 active cities.

Damiani, who earned spots on the AHL All-Rookie Team and the Central Division All-Star Team for 2020-21, led all AHL rookies in scoring and tied for third in the overall scoring race with 36 points (11 goals, 25 assists) in 36 games for Texas. He notched two goals and an assist for the Stars on opening night and was named the CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month for March after registering 15 points in 10 games, including a streak of five consecutive multiple-point outings. Damiani finished his rookie season with an eight-game scoring streak.

A fifth-round selection by Dallas in the 2018 NHL Draft, Damiani turned pro after four seasons with Kitchener in the Ontario Hockey League. The 21-year-old native of Mississauga, Ont., served as captain of his junior club and led the team in scoring in 2019-20. He signed an entry-level NHL contract with the Stars on April 1, 2019.

Riley Damiani Named to AHL All-Rookie Team

Riley Damiani, 21, led all AHL rookies in scoring and tied for third in the overall scoring race with 36 points in 36 games for Texas in 2020-21, his first pro season after four years with Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League. A fifth-round selection by Dallas in the 2018 NHL Draft, Damiani notched two goals and an assist on opening night and later posted five consecutive multiple-point games, including his first pro hat trick on Mar. 13 vs. Colorado. The native of Mississauga, Ont., finished the campaign with an eight-game scoring streak.

Canada beats Russia to Capture Gold at U18 World Championship with Shane Wright Leading as Captain

FRISCO, TEXAS – Canada is golden at the under-18 men’s hockey championship after another strong performance from two of the youngest players at the tournament.

Led by 17-year-old captain Shane Wright and 15-year-old Connor Bedard, the Canadians beat Russia 5-3 on Thursday in the championship game, going undefeated along the way.

Wright had two goals and an assist while Bedard added a goal and a helper.

Brennan Othmann scored a highlight-reel between-the-legs goal for Canada, which got another from Logan Stankoven.

Benjamin Gaudreau made 31 saves and was named top goaltender at the 10-nation event.

Wright and Bedard — two of only seven players in Canadian Hockey League history to be granted exceptional player status to join major junior a year early — finished 2-3 in tournament scoring behind Russia’s Matvei Michkov.

Wright ended the tournament with nine goals and 14 points in only five games — scoring at least a goal in each contest. Bedard wrapped up the event with seven goals and 14 points in seven games.

Cole Perfetti Named April CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month

WINNIPEG, MB – The American Hockey League announced today Moose forward Cole Perfetti has been named the CCM/AHL Rookie of the Month for April.

Perfetti, 19, tied for the lead among AHL rookies, and the Moose, in scoring in April. He recorded 13 points (4G, 9A) in just nine games. Perfetti’s 13 points also left him in a tie for seventh among the league’s top point-getters for the month. His plus-eight rating tied for the lead among rookies and was tied for ninth overall. The Whitby, Ont. product recorded eight of his nine helpers as the primary assist this month. Perfetti also tallied nine points (2G, 7A) at even strength in April. The Winnipeg Jets’ 10th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft saved his best for when the game was on the line during the month, posting three of his goals in the third period and six of his 13 points in the third frame or overtime.

1. Josiah Slavin

The college-to-pro jump is going well for the Colorado College product. After notching a goal in his first pro game on March 28, Slavin has kept it rolling with two goals and two assists in his three tilts since while finding the scoresheet in all four pro games.

He scored the game-tying goal in the second period of an eventual 4-2 loss to Chicago on April 3, registered two assists in a 4-3 win over Chicago three nights later and, most recently, picked up the lone tally while shorthanded in a 4-1 loss to Iowa on Tuesday night. Of his three pro tallies in total, one has come at even strength, one on the power play and one while down a man.

Jets sign Simon Lundmark to a three-year, entry-level contract

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Jets announced today they have agreed to terms with their 2019 second round pick (51stoverall) Simon Lundmark on a three-year, entry-level contract with an average annual value of $925,000.

Lundmark, a 20-year-old defenceman, has spent the past four seasons with Linkopings in the Swedish Elite League and set personal bests with two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 47 games this season. The Stockholm, Sweden native has recorded 16 points (2G, 14A) in 118 games during his SHL career and he has represented Sweden in numerous tournaments, including winning the gold medal at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

 

Riley Damiani started his AHL career with a bang, and the Dallas Stars have taken notice

AUSTIN, TX – When he was named the AHL’s Rookie of the Month on Thursday, Stars prospect Riley Damiani was busy shooting an 80 on the golf course.

Some guys just have it.

Damiani, the Stars’ fifth-round pick in 2018, has started his AHL career with a bang, entering the weekend tied for second in the league in both points (23) and assists (17). The 21-year-old has cracked the scoresheet in 13 of the 17 games he’s played and had his five-game multi-point streak snapped on Wednesday night.

Mackey settling into marquee role for Flames’ farm club

CALGARY, AB – This was not ‘just another game.’

Maybe it’s easier to admit that when you’re not on the ice.

In this case, Calgary Flames defence prospect Connor Mackey — the rookie pro has three NHL appearances on his resume and is currently logging major minutes with the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat — had just finished a day’s work and was nervously tracking his alma mater as the Minnesota State (Mankato) Mavericks quested to make school history and ultimately advance through the regional round to the NCAA’s Frozen Four.

Mackey was a workhorse for the Mavericks for three seasons before signing with the Flames last spring.
