How J.T. Compher became faceoff dynamo for Avalanche: ‘It’s the studying’

DENVER, CO – Follow J.T. Compher during TV timeouts at Ball Arena and witness a crafty NHL veteran perfecting his craft in the faceoff circle.

Why is he talking to the officials?

“Getting to know the linesmen a bit and how they want the draws to go and what they’re looking for that night,” Compher explained recently from the Avs dressing room. “Trying to have a relationship with them so you know what they’re looking for. Most (officials) are about the same. But, sometimes, there is a little wrinkle here or there.”

John Gibson makes 35 saves, Ducks shut out Stars

ANAHEIM, CA – John Gibson made 35 saves for the Anaheim Ducks in a 2-0 win against the Dallas Stars at Honda Center on Wednesday.

It was Gibson’s first shutout since Nov. 2, 2021, and his 24th in the NHL. He also tied Guy Hebert for the second-most wins in Ducks history (173), behind Jean-Sebastien Giguere (206).

“I thought everybody played well. It was a good team game,” Gibson said. “When there were rebounds, they cleared them away.

“They had a good push in the third period, but we found a way just to keep them to the outside. A lot of guys at the end there blocking shots, so it was a good team effort.”

Filip Gustavsson gets 1st NHL Shutout, Wild beat Canucks 3-0

VANCOUVER, BC – Filip Gustavsson stopped 35 shots for his first NHL shutout as the Minnesota Wild beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-0 on Saturday night to snap a two-game skid.

Matt Boldy, Connor Dewar and Sam Steel scored and Mats Zuccarello had two assists for the Wild, who were playing for the third time in four nights.

Gustavsson, making his 32nd career start, had four saves in the first period, 19 in the second and 12 in the third. Many of the shots he faced were from long range. He made a nice stop on Bo Horvat’s deflection on a second-period power play then got a right pad on Ilya Mikheyev’s shot on the doorstep with 8:15 left in the third.

“It was really nice,” the 24-year-old Gustavsson said of his first shutout. “You set a few small goals along the way. First, I wanted to play an AHL game, then I wanted to win an AHL game, then a shutout, then I got a chance to play in the NHL, I wanted to win in the NHL and now I got a shutout. Now we got to look at the next step.”

‘Absolutely poetic’: Shane Wright gets revenge with first NHL goal vs. Canadiens

SEATTLE, WA –

Shane Wright is officially a goal scorer in the NHL, and just as fate would have it, his first tally came against the Montreal Canadiens.

This past summer, the Canadiens passed over the long-expected top pick with their No. 1 overall pick in the NHL Draft, selecting Slovakian forward Juraj Slafkovsky instead.

Wright, who infamously stared down the Canadiens’ table at the draft after the Seattle Kraken selected him fourth overall, also said he was “definitely gonna have a chip on my shoulder” since he fell in the draft.

Sometimes a little chip on your shoulder is a good thing. In this case, it’s paying off with a bit of revenge.

Wright’s first-career NHL goal came in the first period of the Kraken’s game against the Canadiens Tuesday in Seattle, when forward Oliver Bjorkstrand laid the puck on a platter in the low slot for the rookie, who hammered it past netminder Jake Allen.

Not only is it some sweet revenge for Wright, but it’s also a major monkey off his back. The 18-year-old had gone goalless in his first seven NHL games and has struggled to find ice time with the Kraken.

Even on record-setting night, Lightning’s Pierre-Edouard Bellemare takes no game for granted

TAMPA BAY, FL – You have to look deeper to see the true impact center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare has in the Lightning locker room. An important but often overlooked contributor on good teams for close to a decade, he continues to play that role as he nears his 38th birthday.

When players first join the Lightning, Jon Cooper likes to be one of the first to call them. Typically, he finds himself doing most of the talking as the players try to feel out their new head coach. But when Cooper first spoke with Bellemare two offseasons ago, it was different.

Kevin Bieksa’s hockey home is Vancouver, where his heart always was

VANCOUVER, BC – Kevin Bieksa claims he didn’t need attention and never sought the spotlight.

However, that light always found the feisty and determined former Vancouver Canucks defenceman.

Bieksa played hard and played hurt. He was a physical force, voice of reason, mentor, friend and legendary prankster.

His charitable endeavours and work with mental-health initiatives endeared him to fans and the general populace as much as imposing his physical and psychological will on the opposition. And scoring that infamous stanchion goal to propel the Canucks into the 2011 Stanley Cup Final only added to the appeal of a 2001 fifth-round draft choice (151st overall) who beat long odds.

Christian Dvorak Posts 1st NHL hat trick, Canadiens beat Blues 7-4

ST. LOUIS, MO — Christian Dvorak had his first NHL hat trick and the Montreal Canadiens scored three times in a 4:50 span in the second period to rally for a 7-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.

Dvorak completed the hat trick into an empty net with 1:35 remaining in the third period. He broke through after 13 two-goal games.

“That’s nice,” Dvorak said. “I’ve been close a couple times but it’s kind of nice to get it out of the way, I guess.”
