Kings goalie coach Dusty Imoo has turned Jack Campbell into a top-tier NHL performer

LOS ANGELES, CA – The more Dusty Imoo watched his pupil on television, from his hotel room near the Kings’ practice facility, the more he liked it.

His pupil, Jack Campbell, came up with a memorable New Year’s Day performance that still wowed a day later. His save on Jonathan Marchessault of the Vegas Golden Knights might have been his best. The Kings tweeted out a video of it, and Imoo re-tweeted it with a fist-bump emoji.

The game was another moment of affirmation for Imoo as he’s helped rebuild Campbell’s career from the ground up. Even before Campbell’s career-best 46-save game Tuesday, Imoo and fellow Kings goalie coach Bill Ranford have seen the former first-round draft pick go from reclamation story to bona fide NHL stopper.

John Gibson Named to 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend

ANAHEIM, CA – The National Hockey League (NHL) has named goaltender John Gibsonto the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, taking place in San Jose from January 24-27. Gibson will make his second career All-Star appearance following his All-Star debut in 2016 in Nashville. Gibson will become the first Anaheim goaltender to appear in multiple All-Star Games.

Gibson, 25 (7/14/93), currently co-leads the NHL in saves (991). He has a 15-11-6 record with a .924 save percentage (SV%) and a 2.59 goals-against average (GAA) in 34 games. In one-goal games this season, Gibson is 10-0-6 with a .940 SV%. He collected his 100th career NHL win in Anaheim’s 4-3 victory on November 21, 2018 vs. Vancouver to become the fourth Ducks goaltender to reach the milestone, joining Jean-Sebastien Giguere (206), Guy Hebert (173) and Jonas Hiller (162). He also became the fastest to 100 wins with Anaheim (196 games), besting Hiller (214 games), Giguere (248) and Hebert (254).

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a big offseason, one that included signing John Tavares, naming Kyle Dubas as general manager and the ongoing William Nylander contract dispute. When the season finally started, those three things set the tone for the 2018-19 season, but somehow, the backup goalie became the main subject of debate among fans.

Should the Maple Leafs stick with the 35-year-old career backup Curtis McElhinney, who just had the best season of his career, or should they give one of their two NHL-ready goalies from the Toronto Marlies a chance, Garret Sparks or Calvin Pickard? Compher isn’t a household name yet, but Avs forward emerging as offensive threat

DENVER, CO – Prior to the Avalanche erasing a 2-1 deficit against the Stars last Saturday with a pair of late third-period goals, Colorado coach Jared Bednar decided to swap J.T. Compher from the fourth line to the second to play alongside Tyson Jost and Alex Kerfoot.

The result was Compher’s rebound goal off Kerfoot’s shot with under three minutes to play, a lamp-lighter that eventually led to Mikko Rantanen’s game-winner a short time later.

“It was a spur-of-the-moment decision,” Bednar explained that night. “I like what J.T.’s been doing lately — he’s got a hot stick — and we were running out of time, so I was just trying to get him and some other guys out there who might have a chance to score for us.”

Coyotes Confident Schmaltz Can Help Offense Produce

GLENDALE, AZ – Coyotes General Manager John Chayka had wanted to add forward Nick Schmaltz to the roster for some time. Late Sunday, after a 6-1 loss to Calgary on home ice, Chayka pulled the trigger on a two-for-one trade with Chicago and brought Schmaltz into the mix.

“He’s a guy that has top-line potential,” Chayka said Monday morning. “Speed, skill, creativity … Obviously he’s a right shot, which we need. He can play center, he can play wing. When he’s playing center, he’s an elite skater and can really push the pace from the middle of the ice. I think that adds another element and dimension to our team that we’ve been missing. Our offense hasn’t been what we would have hoped through a quarter of the season, so hopefully he can give us a boost in that regard.”

GLENDALE, AZ – Arizona Coyotes President of Hockey Operations and General Manager John Chayka announced tonight that the Coyotes have acquired center Nick Schmaltz from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Brendan Perlini and center Dylan Strome.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – J.T. Compher didn’t tiptoe his way into his first game in nearly six weeks. Instead, he jumped right in with two short-handed goals in the first period.

Compher tallied twice in a matter of 1:25 during a Colorado Avalanche penalty kill to jumpstart the club in a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Friday at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The forward is only the 20th NHL player since 1933-34 to score two short-handed markers in a span of two minutes or less and just the fourth to do it in the last 15 years.

DENVER, CO- The Avalanche wasted no time signing defenseman Ian Cole in the first hour of the 2018 offseason, getting his name on a three-year, $12.75 million contract.

Six weeks into the season, that signing is paying dividends. Avs coach Jared Bednar credits Cole’s play and presence for the defense’s ability to rebound from a recent five-game slide in which the Avalanche allowed 25 goals, a negative skid snapped by Sunday’s 4-1 win in Edmonton.
