Jacob Trouba Opens Up About Being Captain of the Rangers

NEW YORK, NY – There are 32 captains in the NHL currently.

In the summer of 2022, the New York Rangers named Jacob Trouba captain, adding him to this elite club, which is a moment he’ll never forget.

“There was obviously excitement,” Trouba said on being named captain. “It was something that I wanted at the time, so to achieve something I wanted to achieve was fulfilling and it was kind of the start of the journey and then I actually started doing the job.”

New York Rangers Captain Jacob Trouba Enjoying a Strong Offensive Start to the Season

NEW YORK, NY – During the summer, the rumor mill was swirling with the name of the New York Rangers captain. However, Jacob Troubahas not been put off by rumors of a new home for him and his wife and has offensively started the season. Currently having four assists through the first three games, there is a significant positive here with a contract that many, including myself, have been critical of. If the captain can continue this and justify that deal, this is a very different situation.

New York has been desperate for cap space for a while. With big names like Alexis Lafreniere and Igor Shesterkin needing new contracts for next season, the Rangers captain and his $8 million cap hit have been linked with an exit. Based on the previous few seasons, there is no denying that Trouba makes too much for how he plays. Poor performances in critical moments have sunk the roster.

Rangers Captain Jacob Trouba Says ‘Greatest Times of the Summer’ Have Been ‘Hanging Out’ with Son Axel

NEW YORK, NY – Jacob Trouba is enjoying life as a new dad!

While speaking to PEOPLE at the opening of his first solo art exhibit at Harper’s Chelsea 512 in Manhattan, the New York Rangers captain — who welcomed a son with his wife, Kelly Tyson, in January — says fatherhood has changed his ideas about “what’s important.”

“It’s been great,” Trouba, 30, says. “There’s no real playbook that you can read — I mean, you can kind of prepare a little bit, but it’s very much learning on the fly.”

When Trouba and his wife welcomed baby Axel at the start of the year, the hockey star was in the middle of one of the Rangers’ best seasons in years. The team would later fall just shy of making the Stanley Cup Finals in June, giving Trouba a break from regular practices until training camp begins in September — and plenty of time to spend with his 8-month-old son, who has been an off-season highlight for the NHL star.

Jacob Trouba named the 2023-24 recipient of the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award

NEW YORK, NY – New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba was named the 2023-24 recipient of the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, which is presented “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season and who plays a leading role in his community growing the game of hockey.” Trouba is the first Rangers player to earn the annual Mark Messier Leadership Award since it was first presented on a season-by-season basis in the spring of 2007.

Since joining the organization ahead of the 2019-20 season, the 30-year-old defenseman has helped lead the Blueshirts to success on the ice and has taken pride in representing the club in the community. This past summer, he participated in the Rangers Youth Hockey Camp, signing autographs for and spending time with kids taking part in the camp. Now in his second year as team captain after being named to the position on Aug. 9, 2022, Trouba frequently hosts meet and greets following home games with kids from the Garden of Dreams Foundation, spending time with kids and occasionally taking them on a tour of the locker room.

Jacob Trouba named New York Rangers captain, first since McDonagh in 2018

NEW YORK, NY – Jacob Trouba was named captain of the New York Rangers on Tuesday.

He is the 28th player to be named captain in Rangers history. Mark Messier held the position twice, from 1991-97 and again from 2000-04.

“It’s a huge honor and something that means something, especially here in this organization with the history and the past players that have been captain before me,” Trouba said. “As a kid I grew up watching [Brian] Leetch and Messier, [Chris] Drury and [Jaromir] Jagr. … You come here and you learn more about the history of the guys that were before them. You see pictures, you see jerseys around this place.

“It’s now my turn to carry that legacy on for those guys.”

The 28-year-old defenseman is the Rangers’ first captain in more than four years, since defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 26, 2018.

“It was just the right time,” said Drury, who was captain from 2008-11 and has been general manager since May 5, 2021. “As a lot of our players have said publicly the last couple days, ‘Jake’ was basically doing the job for the last couple of seasons. We just felt it was appropriate and now is the time. We’re excited to see the ‘C’ on him, that’s for sure.”

Ann Arbor native, ex-Wolverine Andrew Copp shining in NHL playoffs

NEW YORK, NY – NHL teams trading draft picks to acquire players to gear up for a Stanley Cup playoff run can be risky.

The New York Rangers trading two conditional second-round picks and a sixth-round pick for former Michigan forward Andrew Copp at the March 21 deadline appears to have been worth the gamble.

The Ann Arbor native continued his strong postseason Tuesday, recording a goal and two assists to help the Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 and tie the best-of-seven second-round series at 2-2.
