OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week: Cole Perfetti

TORONTO, ONT – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that draft eligible Saginaw Spirit forward Cole Perfetti is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with 10 points in three games including four goals and six assists along with a plus/minus rating of plus-6.

Perfetti becomes the first Spirit player to claim the honour this season, stringing together three straight first star performances as the Spirit maintained their standing atop the West Division with a pair of victories. His five assists in Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday equal a past single game mark recorded by Vincent Trocheck (March 2012) and Marcus Crawford (January 2017) as the Spirit defeated the Greyhounds 7-5. Perfetti followed up on his career high-matching five point effort with his first hat-trick of the season on Friday as the Spirit were edged by the visiting Flint Firebirds 5-4. He rounded out the weekend with a goal and an assist on Saturday as Saginaw bounced back to defeat the Kitchener Rangers 8-2 on home ice. Perfetti became the fastest player in Spirit history to reach the 100 career assist mark in the weekend finale, bringing him to within three points of the century mark in his sophomore season.

Devils acquire Nolan Foote and First-Round Pick

NEWARK, NJ – The New Jersey Devils today traded forward Blake Coleman to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for left wing Nolan Foote and Vancouver’s first-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft (previously acquired by Tampa Bay). The condition on the pick is as follows: if Vancouver fails to qualify for the 2020 NHL playoffs, New Jersey shall then receive Vancouver’s first-round selection in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft instead of a first-round selection in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Foote, 19, is currently serving as captain of Kelowna (WHL) where he has 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points in 26 games. In December, he helped Team Canada win a gold medal at the World Junior Championships with three goals and two assists in seven contests. For the past two seasons, Foote has been a member of the WHL All-Star team that has participated in the Jr. Super Series where his teammates included Devils’ prospect Ty Smith. The 6’4, 200lb., left shot winger has skated in 194 WHL career games with the Rockets posting 83 goals and 88 assists for 171 points and added 167 penalty minutes. Born November 29, 2000, the native of Denver, Colorado was Tampa Bay’s first round selection, 27th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Filip Gustavsson Named AHL Goalie of the Month

SPRINGFIELD, MA – The American Hockey League announced today that Iowa Wild forward Gerald Mayhew, Springfield Thunderbirds forward Owen Tippett and Belleville Senators goaltender Filip Gustavsson have been selected as the league’s award winners for January 2020.

Gustavsson, the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month, posted a 1.78 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage last month, allowing only nine goals on 155 shots in five starts (4-0-1) while helping Belleville climb into first place in the North Division.

Gustavsson stopped 28 shots in a 5-3 win over Lehigh Valley on Jan. 4, his only home appearance of the month. He came back with 35 saves in a 5-1 victory at Rochester on Jan. 10, and turned aside 34 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss at Manitoba on Jan. 15. Gustavsson earned his first career AHL shutout on Jan. 20, making 23 saves in a 3-0 win at Rockford, and registered 26 stops in the Senators’ 5-2 win at Utica on Jan. 24.

Gustavsson is 12-5-2 in 19 appearances for Belleville this season, with a 3.24 GAA, an .891 save percentage and one shutout. A second-round choice by Pittsburgh in the 2016 NHL Draft, Gustavsson was acquired in a trade by Ottawa on Feb. 23, 2018, and has played 57 AHL games with Belleville, posting a record of 26-25-4. The 21-year-old native of Skelleftea, Sweden, won a silver medal with Sweden and was named the tournament’s top goaltender at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Each monthly award winner will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming home game in recognition of his achievement.

‘Bullet’ shot makes Foote dangerous weapon for Canada

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic — In a do-or-die game where one shot might be the difference between gold and bronze, you dish the puck to Nolan Foote.

He is Team Canada’s weapon – and he will be in the lineup for Saturday’s semifinal against Team Finland after avoiding a suspension following a hit that got him ejected in the first 53 seconds in Thursday’s quarterfinal.

Rookie phenom Wright taking the lead in Kingston

KINGSTON, ONT – If you’ve watched the Kingston Frontenacs play at all this season, you already know there’s something special about Shane Wright.

The centreman sits second atop the OHL rookie scoring race with 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points in just as many games through the opening half of his first season in the league. He plays a 240-foot game with remarkable acceleration and a wicked shot.

Behind closed doors he leads practice drills, he puts 100% into every rep of his workouts, and doesn’t cut corners. He’s a leader among the five other rookies on his team and shows them how to do what comes naturally to him: put up big points.

Frontenacs Add to Leadership Group By Adding Wright as Youngest Captain in CHL History

KINGSTON, ONT – Nick King and Shane Wright have been named Assistant Captains for the remainder of the season. They will join Captain Jakob Brahaney and Assistant Jake Murray.

“Since Nick has joined the Frontenacs, he has been a leader on the ice and in the locker room” said GM Darren Keily. “His experience has been important in a dressing room full of younger players”

“Although Shane is a young player, he has earned the privilege of having a letter on his jersey.” continued Keily. “He has been a leader since joining the Frontenacs in September”

Local Goalie Garret Sparks Makes Good

CHICAGO, IL – When Garret Sparks was seven years old, his parents, Mike and Lisa, decided it seemed like the right time to introduce him to hockey.

They signed up Garret for the Scooters program at the Elmhurst YMCA – the same outdoor rink where Mike started playing in fourth grade and developed into a goaltender. Scooters, a program that continues to thrive today, encourages parents to get on the ice with their children while teaching the basics of skating and hockey.

“We had a lot of fun,” Mike said.

For the final session, the Scooters coaches wanted to hold a scrimmage to show off everyone’s progress. Just one problem: Every kid was a skater. Goaltending wasn’t part of the program.

With the parents off the ice and watching from the other side of the glass, a coach asked for two kids to volunteer to play goalie. Nobody moved a muscle. So he asked again.
