Griffins Goaltender On the Rise: Filip Larsson

DETROIT, MI – In his only college season, goaltender Filip Larsson backstopped the Denver Pioneers to the Frozen Four before joining the Griffins as the team’s third goaltender during the Calder Cup Playoffs.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2019 – Larsson had a decorated freshman season at Denver, which turned out to be his first and only year on campus. Despite missing nearly all of the first two months of Denver’s season due to injury, he was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for the conference’s goalie of the year award. Larsson was also co-recipient of the Pioneers’ Bill Masterton Award for team MVP.

Detroit agrees to terms with Filip Larsson on entry-level deal

DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with goaltender Filip Larsson on a three-year entry-level contract. The contract will begin with the 2019-20 season.

Larsson, 20, recently completed his freshman season at the University of Denver, where he helped the Pioneers make an appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four after posting back-to-back shutouts in the West Regional. After missing nearly all of the first two months of Denver’s season due to injury, Larsson made his college debut on Nov. 24 and was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Goaltender of the Month for December, in his first full month of collegiate action, and also captured NCHC Goalie of the Week honors on Jan. 14 and Feb. 4. In 22 games as a freshman, Larsson posted a 13-6-3 record, 1.95 goals-against average, 0.932 save percentage and four shutouts. The Stockholm, Sweden, native was named to the 2019 NCHC All-Rookie Team and was also a finalist for the conference’s goalie of the year award.

Gustavsson, Brannstrom, Soderlund and Larsson Help Sweden to Silver Medal at 2018 WJC

BUFFALO, NY – Filip Gustavsson, Erik Brannstrom, Tim Soderlund and Filip Larsson helped Team Sweden earn a Silver Medal at the 2018 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, NY.

Filip Gustavsson was named the Most Valuable Goaltender of the tournament after posting a 1.81 GAA and 0.924 Save Percentage.
